In Memory |

|
Shelton Cain |
| |
|
|
WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever cherish their |
|
|
memories of Shelton Bennet Cain of Hallsville, who passed away on |
|
|
January 9, 2025, at the age of 96; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Hallsville, Shelton Cain |
|
|
was born to Douglas and Virginia Cain on May 2, 1928, and he grew |
|
|
up with two sisters, Janelle and Virginia; after graduating from |
|
|
Hallsville High School in 1945, he was accepted into Texas A&M |
|
|
University; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In 1946, Mr. Cain enlisted in the U.S. Army, |
|
|
embarking on a military career that would span nearly four and a |
|
|
half decades with the army and the Texas National Guard Bureau; |
|
|
over the course of his career, he distinguished himself as a |
|
|
military personnel technician with the Texas National Guard and |
|
|
concluded his active-duty service with the TXNG adjutant general |
|
|
at Camp Mabry; he retired in 1988 at the rank of chief warrant |
|
|
officer 4, and his awards included the World War II Victory |
|
|
Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Army Reserve |
|
|
Component Achievement Medal; along the way, he earned an |
|
|
associate's degree in accounting from Kilgore College; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Keenly interested in Civil War history, Mr. Cain |
|
|
visited many battlefields from that conflict as well as Arlington |
|
|
National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.; moreover, he was actively |
|
|
involved with the Noonday Holiness Camp, and he was a valued |
|
|
congregant of Winterfield United Methodist Church in Longview; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Cain was preceded in death by his first wife, |
|
|
Betty Jean Ranels Cain; the couple shared a fulfilling marriage |
|
|
that spanned 53 years, and they raised two children, Cathie and |
|
|
Laura; fortunate enough to find love again, he wed Bonnie Dickard |
|
|
Barker in 2002, and they spent nearly two decades together before |
|
|
her passing in 2020; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Deeply dedicated to his family, his faith, and his |
|
|
country, Shelton Cain earned the lasting respect and admiration |
|
|
of all who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
|
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
|
|
of Shelton Bennet Cain and extend heartfelt condolences to the |
|
|
members of his family: to his daughters, Cathie Cain and Laura |
|
|
Mahan and her husband, Randy; to his sister, Virginia Ann Rhodes, |
|
|
and her husband, Larry; to his grandson, Joseph Mark Morton, and |
|
|
his wife, Laura; to his four great-grandchildren and three |
|
|
great-great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives and |
|
|
friends; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
|
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
|
|
this day, it do so in memory of Shelton Cain. |
