Willie Boone |
| |
|
|
WHEREAS, The citizens of Houston lost an admired civic |
|
|
leader with the passing of Willie Belle Mollett Boone on July 15, |
|
|
2025, at the age of 93; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The daughter of Florine McDaniel and L. J. |
|
|
Mollett, the former Willie Belle Mollett was born in Beaumont on |
|
|
May 22, 1932; she was a graduate of Charlton-Pollard High School; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, After moving to Houston, she met Jesse Ree Boone, |
|
|
and the couple shared a rewarding marriage that spanned six |
|
|
decades before his passing; they were the proud parents of two |
|
|
sons, David and Rodney, and over the years, their family grew to |
|
|
include seven grandchildren, Geneva, Sineca, Tara, Naqusha, |
|
|
Michael, Carl, and Bernard; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A resident of the Sunnyside community, Mrs. Boone |
|
|
was a steadfast advocate for the neighborhood; she became active |
|
|
in the Democratic Party, and she held positions at the county, |
|
|
state, and national levels, including precinct chair and |
|
|
election judge; to promote civic engagement in underrepresented |
|
|
neighborhoods, Mrs. Boone founded and served as president of the |
|
|
Southeast Precinct Judges Council; she also worked in the offices |
|
|
of Congressman Ken Bentsen and Commissioner Rodney Ellis, in the |
|
|
Harris County Clerk's Office, and for the Teamsters Union; in |
|
|
addition, she was an employee at Praxair for more than 25 years; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Boone volunteered her time in behalf of many |
|
|
organizations, including the Missouri City/Houston Space City |
|
|
Chapter of the Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., and the Barbara |
|
|
Jordan Houston Section of the National Council of Negro Women, |
|
|
and she was a member of the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature; in |
|
|
2021, she was honored as a Living Legend by Commissioner Rodney |
|
|
Ellis; a woman of faith, she was a valued congregant of the |
|
|
Windsor Village United Methodist Church; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Although Willie Belle Boone's passing has brought |
|
|
great sorrow to those who loved her, her life was an inspiring |
|
|
example of the good that one person can accomplish; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
|
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
|
|
of Willie Belle Mollett Boone and extend sincere condolences to |
|
|
her family and friends; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
|
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
|
|
this day, it do so in memory of Willie Belle Boone. |
