BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

San Benito experienced a great tragedy on October 17th, 2023, when Lieutenant Milton Resendez was shot and killed while in pursuit of two fleeing criminal suspects. To honor his memory, C.S.H.B. 1960 seeks to rename the part of State Highway 345 in the city of San Benito as the Lieutenant Milton Resendez Memorial Highway.

It is the committee's opinion that this bill does not expressly create a criminal offense, increase the punishment for an existing criminal offense or category of offenses, or change the eligibility of a person for community supervision, parole, or mandatory supervision.

ANALYSIS

C.S.H.B. 1960 amends the Transportation Code to designate the portion of State Highway 345 in the municipal limits of San Benito as the Lieutenant Milton Resendez Memorial Highway. 	AN ACT
	relating to the designation of a portion of State Highway 345 in
	San Benito as the Lieutenant Milton Resendez Memorial Highway.
	BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
	SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 225, Transportation Code,
	is amended by adding Section 225.246 to read as follows:
	Sec. 225.246. LIEUTENANT MILTON RESENDEZ MEMORIAL HIGHWAY.
	(a) The portion of State Highway 345 in the municipal limits of San
	Benito is designated as the Lieutenant Milton Resendez Memorial
	Highway.
	(b) Subject to Section 225.021(c), the department shall:
	(1) design and construct markers indicating the
	designation as the Lieutenant Milton Resendez Memorial Highway and
	any other appropriate information; and
	(2) erect a marker at each end of the highway and at
	appropriate intermediate sites along the highway.
	SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
